Shots & Jiggers

Napier silver plate lidded jigger

This is a vintage silver plated jigger in the shape of a miniature cocktail shaker. Standing 3-5/8" tall when lidded, the jigger itself is a shade under 2-1/2" tall, with diameters of 1-3/4" at its mouth and 1-3/8" at its base. One side has measurement marks for 1 and 2 ounces. Bottom is marked “Napier Silver Plate, Pat. Pend.” Other than the exterior tarnish, all three pieces (the top portion has a detachable cap) are in perfect condition with no dings or dents. We don’t clean or polish our silver because many people like the old patina look, but you can see from the picture of the interior how beautifully these pieces would “clean up” if you’re so inclined. Pair of “Chief Nip” and “Chief Sip” jiggers

This is a pair of 4-oz frosted jiggers featuring Chief Nip and Chief Sip. Gay Fad introduced the Chief Nip design in the 1950 price list and my friend and co-author Donna McGrady has several Chief Nip pieces, all of them with black graphics on frosted barware. We didn’t know Chief Nip came in colors – and we didn’t know that he has a “brother” named Chief Sip – until I found this twosome! Each jigger features four separate Indian caricatures at the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-oz lines respectively. Okay, okay, I know these designs would never pass today’s political correctness test and some people may even find them offensive, but you have to remember that these jiggers were produced over 60 years ago. Fran Taylor undoubtedly had no intention of denigrating an entire ethnic group with these designs and considered them to be nothing other than humorous. Each jigger stands 3" tall with diameters of 2-1/8" at the rim and 1-7/8" at the base that has the Hazel Atlas mark on the bottom. Both jiggers are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or loss of color. Require hand washing to preserve the paint and the finish. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Gay Fad “Little Shot Big Shot” shot glass

Gay Fad introduced this frosted Little Shot Big Shot shot glass in the 1954 Gay Fad Price List. Wraparound brown caricature design of a young “Little Shot” Indian brave shooting an arrow into the backside of the “Big Shot” chief. Glass stands just over 2-1/4" tall with diameters of 1-7/8" at its rim and 1-3/8" at its thick weighted base. Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, scratches, or color loss. Requires hand washing to preserve the paint and finish. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Gay Fad South of the Border “Say When” jigger

This frosted shot glass is one of Gay Fad’s “Say When” line of souvenir shots that feature line drawings and/or caricatures at the 1-oz, 2-oz, 3-oz, and 4-oz levels defining what those levels mean. This one says “Say When You-All” and “Souvenir of South of the Border,” but based on the red and white graphics, the border must be the Mason-Dixon Line, not the U.S. border with Mexico. The 1-oz line says “1 oz for Yankees,” the graphic being a man, presumably a Northerner, passed out cold on the ground. The 2-oz line says “2 oz for boll weevils,” the graphic being one of those pesky bugs. The 3-oz line says “3 oz for carpetbaggers,” the graphic being a man sitting on a box and pulling paper money out of his carpetbag. The 4-oz line says “To the top for rebels,” the graphic being a bearded Southern gentleman with hat and cane. Glass stands just shy of 3" tall with diameters of 2-1/8" at its rim and 1-7/8" at its base that carries the Hazel Atlas mark. We have two of these clever shot glasses and price is for each. Both are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or paint loss and require hand washing to preserve the paint and the finish. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

German shot glass travel set

Here’s a unique vintage shot glass travel set dating to ca WWII. Set consists of 4 metal shot glasses with chrome finished exteriors and gold washed interiors. They are slightly graduated in size allowing them to fit one inside the other, with all 4 together fitting inside a leather travel case with snap closure. Largest glass stands 2-1/8" tall with diameters of 2" at the mouth and 1-3/8" at the bottom. When inside the leather case, the set measures 2-3/8" tall with diameters of 2-1/4" at the top and 1-1/2" at the bottom. Case top has gold initials of MJE. Some of the stitching around the top has come loose and there are some scuffs on the sides and a small tear in the leather above the snap from being opened and closed so many times, but the case is still fully functional and the snap closes securely. The shot glass interiors and exteriors show very slight scratching that we have made no attempt to buff out. Bottoms of all 4 shot glasses are marked “Made in Germany,” indicating they were made prior to the post-WWII division of Germany into East (German Democratic Republic) and West (Federal Republic of Germany) in 1949. Quite an amazing relic of times long gone by. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
