Set of 6 “My Old Kentucky Home” julep cups

How exciting is this?? A complete set of the six julep cups Louisville Stoneware produced in 1976 to commemorate the Kentucky Derby’s centennial year and “My Old Kentucky Home,” the famous song written by Stephen Foster in 1853 and first sung at the Kentucky Derby prior to its 50th running in 1924. Each julep cup is different, quoting a line from the lyrics, with an appropriate graphic underneath. In order of their appearance in the song, they are:

“The sun shines bright” - pictures a racehorse and trainer in a fenced meadow.

“The meadow’s in the bloom” - pictures a whole tangle of meadow flowers.

“Where the birds make music all the day” - pictures a pair of cardinals perched on branches, one of which has his head thrown back and mouth open in song.

“Weep no more my lady” - pictures an old woman with bowed head wearing a long dress and lacy headpiece sitting on a chair in front of a window.

“We will sing one song” - pictures a group of ladies and gentlemen, one with a guitar, sitting and standing around a table singing.

“For my old Kentucky home” - pictures the door and windows of a 2-story brick house.

These handpainted julep cups all are banded top and bottom in a smoky blue color, the lyric quotes are in a deeper blue script, and the graphics are painted in various shades of green, yellow, brown, and blue, with dark blue outlines and accents. Cups stand 4" tall with diameters of 3-3/8" at their rims and 2-1/2" at their unglazed bottom rings. Each one is stamped “© Kind Trees, 1976” on the bottom, as well as with semicircular printing saying “Louisville Stoneware Co., Made in KY, U.S.A.” All 6 cups are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, crazing, or color loss. 1974 Kentucky Derby julep cup

Everyone knows about the famous Kentucky Derby mint julep glasses, but did you know that Louisville Stoneware Company has been producing beautifully handpainted stoneware julep cups for over 35 years? This is one of the oldest and rarest, having been created for the centennial Derby in 1974. Banded in soft shades of brown at both top and bottom, the front features a race horse and jockey thundering down the track in a cloud of billowing dust. Colors are rust, green, and deep navy blue. Cup stands 3-7/8" tall with diameters of 3-1/4" at the mouth tapering to 2-1/2" at the base. Bottom says “Made in Kentucky U.S.A. by Louisville Stoneware Co., 1974, Year of the 100th Kentucky Derby.” Amazingly enough, this one has survived in pristine condition, with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. 1977 Kentucky Derby julep cup

Here’s a vintage Louisville Stoneware handpainted julep cup created for the 1977 Kentucky Derby. Its front depicts a horse’s head in shades of brown and beige, outlined and emphasized with deep navy blue, behind which are trees, grass and sky, painted in greens and blues. Top and bottom are banded in beige. Cup stands 3-7/8" tall with diameters of 3-1/4" at the mouth tapering to 2-1/2" at the base. Bottom says “Made in Kentucky U.S.A. by Louisville Stoneware Co., 1977, Year of the 103rd Kentucky Derby.” Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches.  (Click on picture for more images.) 1977 Kentucky Derby julep cup #2

This is another 1997 Kentucky Derby Louisville Stoneware handpainted julep cup. Its front features a race horse ridden by a jockey in colorful silks. Colors are shades of brown, yellow, tan, and light blue, outlined and emphasized in deep navy blue. Top and bottom are banded in beige and deep brown. Bottom says “Made in Kentucky U.S.A. by Louisville Stoneware Co., 1977, Year of the 103rd Kentucky Derby.” Cup stands 3-7/8" tall with diameters of 3-1/4" at the mouth tapering to 2-1/2" at the base.
