1956 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass - 2 tails, 1 star
This is one of the famous (infamous?) 1956 “Tale of the Tails” Kentucky Derby mint julep glasses. 1956 must have been a bad year for mint julep glass production because the official glass wound up being produced in four variations! The glass features three horses and the manufacturer obviously intended that all three of them have tails. But oops! On some glasses, only two of the horses have tails and these are called “Two Tails” glasses. It was also intended that the glass have two stars, one on each side, near the top. But oops again! Some glasses have only have one star and are called “One Star.” So depending on how many tails and how many stars, the four variations are “One Star Three Tails,” “One Star Two Tails,” “Two Stars Three Tails,” and “Two Stars Two Tails.” Whew! Got all that? Our glass is the “One Star Two Tails” version. It is completely frosted and the design wraps all the way around, consisting of the Churchill Downs spires and three stylized horses and jockeys thundering down the track, with “Kentucky Derby” above on one side and “Churchill Downs” above on the other side. Colors are brown, black, and yellow. The 1875-1955 winners list also wraps all the way around and is in green, with no markings for Triple Crown winners Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter and is in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. 1958 Kentucky Derby Gold Bar mint julep glass
This is a 1958 Kentucky Derby Gold Bar mint julep glass, so named because there were actually two glasses produced in 1958. This Gold Bar glass has two frosted panels, each depicting a black line drawing of two race horses ridden by gold jockeys, to the right of which is a “gold bar” with a gold-on-gold Churchill Downs spire and head-on horse and rider. Underneath the drawings, the front panel lists Kentucky Derby winners from 1875-1916 and the back panel lists winners from 1917-1957. Between the panels, the left side says “Churchill Downs” in gold lettering and the right side says “Kentucky Derby,” also in gold letters. (The second 1958 mint julep glass, named the Iron Liege glass, was actually produced from overstocked 1957 glasses, which were restamped to add the name of the 1957 winner Iron Liege.) This Gold Bar glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. We are thrilled to have three of these rare old glasses and price is for each. All 3 are in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, or gold loss. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

1958 Kentucky Derby Gold Bar error glass
This is an exceedingly rare 1958 Kentucky Derby Gold Bar “error” mint julep glass. It looks exactly like the 1958 Gold Bar glass listed immediately above, BUT there’s a mistake. The gold-lettered “Churchill Downs” and “Kentucky Derby” between the two frosted panels are missing! Every once in awhile such mistakes are made, and collectors go nuts for these “error glasses.” Error glasses appreciate in value even faster than their perfect counterparts. For instance, a regular 2000 Kentucky Derby glass is worth $10 today, but a 2000 error glass (with a pink rose instead of a red rose) is already worth $85! This Gold Bar “error” glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, or gold loss. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
