1990 Kentucky Derby Festival glass

This is a mint julep glass from the 1990 Kentucky Derby Festival. The Festival was founded in 1956 and is held every year in Louisville, KY during the two weeks preceding the Kentucky Derby. The winged horse Pegasus has always been the Festival’s mascot, and the Pegasus Parade was the Festival’s founding event. The first official Festival glass appeared in 1968, a second in 1984, and they have been produced continuously since 1987. The front of this glass features a stylized Pegasus logo of teal, purple, and orange, and reads “Kentucky Derby Festival ’90” and “35th Celebration.” The back features a smaller Pegasus Parade logo and lists all of the parade themes from 1956-1989. Drug Emporium sponsored the 1990 glass and their name is on the side. Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter and is in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. 1994 Kentucky Derby Festival glass

This is a mint julep glass from the 1994 Kentucky Derby Festival. Front features a stylized Pegasus logo in teal, orange and purple on a frosted background with “1994 Kentucky Derby Festival” above and “It’s For You!” below. Back gives the recipe for “The Maker’s Mark Mint Julep.” Glass stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter and is in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches.

By the way, Maker’s Mark is a brand of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey produced at the Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto, KY, which is a National Historic Landmark. Family owned and operated since 1840 (originally as the T.W. Samuels Distillery in Samuels Depot, KY), the first bottle of Maker’s Mark was produced in 1957. Marge Samuels (wife of Bill, Sr.) designed the bottle and named the whisky, and all of us “antiqueoholics” will love this story! Mrs. Samuels collected fine pewter and always searched for “the mark of the maker.” She also collected cognac bottles, many of which were sealed in colorful wax. So she named her husband’s bourbon “Maker’s Mark” and the bottles are sealed with red wax to this day! (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
