1948 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This 1948 Kentucky Derby glass is especially collectable, not only because it’s over 60 years old, but also because 1948 was the year that Citation won the Derby and went on to become the 8th Triple Crown Winner. He was ridden by legendary jockey Eddie Arcaro, who had also won the Triple Crown in 1941 on Whirlaway, the only jockey in history to ride two Triple Crown winners. This glass stands 5-1/4" tall with diameters of 2-3/4" at it rim and 2-1/4" at its base. Front features a horse’s head in a horseshoe, with “Kentucky Derby” above and “Churchill Downs” below. A race horse and jockey is on either side. All printing is in green. Glass is completely frosted except for the clear bottom that carries the Libbey stylized “L.” Perfect condition with no chips, nicks, cracks, or scratches. (Click on picture for more images.) 1949 Kentucky Derby mint julep glass

This is a very rare Kentucky Derby mint julep glass from 1949, the year of the Kentucky Derby’s Diamond Jubilee, and the year after Citation became the 8th Triple Crown Winner. This glass is completely frosted except for the clear bottom that carries the Libby stylized “L.” All printing is in green. Front features a picture of Martin J. “Matt” Winn, Churchill Downs president, beneath which is “He has seen them all.” Indeed, Col. Winn (June 30, 1861 - October 6, 1949) saw every one of the first 75 Kentucky Derbys, with this one being the last before his death a few months later. A May 7, 1934 Time Magazine article says:

The man who is responsible for making the Derby the racing classic of the American continent also has the distinction of having seen every Derby ever run. In 1875, 14-year-old Matt Winn sat in his father's grocery wagon and watched Aristides win the race. Grocery Boy Matt Winn became Matt Winn, merchant tailor of Covington, Ky. Twenty years ago, Tailor Matt Winn became Colonel Matt J. Winn, racetrack manager. In 1914 he upped the Derby's purse, steadily began to ballyhoo the race into a social and sporting extravaganza. Now, 73, Colonel Winn as president of the American Turf Association operates not only Churchill Downs at Louisville, but Latonia, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, as well as Lincoln Fields and Washington Park outside Chicago.

The back of the glass says “Kentucky Derby Diamond Jubilee” and lists all of the Kentucky Derby winners from 1875 - 1948. By the way, Ponder, a 16-1 shot, won the Diamond Jubilee Run for the Roses by three lengths. His sire Pensive had won the Derby in 1946, and his son Needles won it in 1956, making this one of only two 3-generation dynasties in Kentucky Derby history. The other was Reigh Count, the 1928 Derby winner, who sired Count Fleet, the 1943 winner, who sired Count Turf, the 1951 winner.

This glass, an extraordinary piece of Kentucky Derby history, stands 5-1/4" tall x 2-3/4" in diameter. Outstanding condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. One tiny paint break on the H of “He has seen them all.” (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
