Vintage Kentucky Derby can/glass holder
This is a waaay vintage Kentucky Derby foam can or glass holder we acquired at an estate sale as part of a marvelous collection of 1950's Kentucky Derby memorabilia. Standing 4-3/8" tall, the bottom diameter is 3-1/2" and the flexible holder tapers upward to a 3" diameter top that stretches to fit snugly around a beverage can or most any glass to keep its contents cold longer. Holder is a deep mustard yellow color with brown printing that says “The Kentucky Derby,” “The Run for the Roses,” “Louisville, Kentucky,” and “Huggers Mfg. - Baytown, Texas, Huggs’em Hot or Cold.” Brown artwork includes a surprisingly detailed drawing of four horses and riders racing down the track in front of the Churchill Downs clubhouse, as well as what I assume was the polar bear logo of this long-gone company. For a piece of foam that’s over fifty years old, this nifty old can holder is in amazingly good condition. Still very flexible and not at all hard or crumbly. Several old discoloration marks and the bottom is “cracked,” but this thing still works exactly as advertized: “Huggs’em Hot or Cold!” (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

1969 Kentucky Derby decanter
This is a Jim Beam Kentucky Derby pink roses decanter from 1969. The front features Churchill Downs, complete with spires, two sprays of pink roses, and says “Churchill Downs, Home of the 95th Kentucky Derby.” The back features a large horseshoe with two additional sprays of pink roses and says “95th Run for the Roses.” Inside the horseshoe is a drawing of Aristides, the first Kentucky Derby winner on May 17,1875. The front of the stopper says “Run for the Roses” and the back says “Churchill Downs,” but these words are currently mostly covered up with the remnants of the original U.S. Internal Revenue liquor stamp strip, which extends down the bottle back. Since the bottle is empty, of course the stamp strip was slit in order to gain access to its contents, but we have made no attempt to clean up or remove the portion of the strip that remains. 11" tall x 7" wide x 2-1/4" deep. Bottom says “Creation of James B. Beam Distilling Co., KY - DRB-230, Genuine Regal China, © C. Miller 1969, 145, Liquor Bottle”. To the right of that are three angled letters that appear to be DHH or maybe DHN. Both the decanter and the stopper are in excellent condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. Some loss of gilding to a few of the gilded letters. Whether you’re a Kentucky Derby collector, a Jim Beam collector, or “just” someone who appreciates beautiful objects, you’re sure to love this fine old decanter! (Click on picture for more images.) 1974 Kentucky Derby Norman Rockwell plate
“The Weigh-In” is a collector plate by Norman Rockwell in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary 1974 Kentucky Derby. It depicts Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Arcaro, five-time Kentucky Derby winner, dressed in full race regalia and holding his saddle, being weighed in prior to the race by a very intent Derby official. Eddie Arcaro (1916-1997) won more American Classic Races than any other jockey in history and is the only jockey to have won the Triple Crown twice – 1941 on Whirlaway and 1948 on Citation. His first Kentucky Derby win was in 1938 on Lawrin, and he went on to win four more Derbys – 1941 on Whirlaway, 1945 on Hoop, Jr., 1948 on Citation, and 1952 on Hill Gail. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), America’s most beloved and most widely-recognized illustrator, was a prolific artist famous for his depictions of American life, culture, and values, many prints appearing as covers for “The Saturday Evening Post.” “The Weigh-In” was featured on the Post cover on September 6, 1958. This beautiful full-color collector plate is 8-1/2" in diameter and rimmed in gold. The back has extensive gold text about both Norman Rockwell and Eddie Arcaro, and is also marked as Gorham Fine China. Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or gold loss. 1974 Kentucky Derby knife
Yes! This unique little gadget from the centennial 1974 Kentucky Derby really is a knife! Looking more like a beautiful 1-1/2" diameter mother of pearl pendant encased in a brass ring with a hanging loop on top, one side says “100th running of the Ky. Derby, May 4, 1974, Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY” and the other side features a highly detailed horse’s head in the center with “Aristides 1874” above and “Cannonade 1974” below. Very pretty indeed. But surprise – out pops a small curved knife blade from each side, both still dangerously sharp after all these years! Amazing! Pity the poor mugger who attempts to attack the lady wearing this lovely pendant on a chain around her neck! Could also be put on a keychain. But since we’ve never seen another like it, probably its best use is as a treasured display item! Excellent vintage condition, with only one minor defect: the “t” in the middle of Aristides’ name has rubbed away. No nicks, chips, cracks, or dings anywhere. Brass has developed a nice patina. Blades are shiny and sharp. Truly an outstanding addition to any Kentucky Derby collection. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
