Woodpecker toothpick holder
Here is a unique mechanical toothpick holder that dates to at least the late ‘30's or early 40's. I know because it sat in my mother’s china closet from my earliest memory and we kids always loved to play with it and make the woodpecker pick up a toothpick with his sharp double-pronged bill by pushing down on his brilliant red comb. They were flat wooden toothpicks, a number of which are still in the log holder, and he still picks them up perfectly! This great piece of nostalgia is 3-3/4" long x 1-1/2" wide x 2-7/8" high. Makes a wonderful display piece and who knows, it might still fascinate your kids or grandkids even in this age of TV and video games! (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Holy Land Nazareth souvenir plate
Here’s something quite unique and very difficult to find unless you were fortunate enough to travel to the Holy Land in the millennium year of 2000. This 8-5/8" diameter hand-painted souvenir plate depicts the village of Nazareth in bright shades of yellow, gold, dark red, blue, brown, and green, all features outlined in black. The entire scene is surrounded by a 1/2" border of deep cobalt blue. Black text above and below the village scene read “Holy Land 2000" and “Nazareth”. Warwick monk plate
This is one of the famous antique Warwick monk plates (also called friar plates, cleric plates, or cardinal plates). Quoting from the Kovels: “Warwick china was made in Wheeling, WV, in a pottery working from 1887 to 1951. Many pieces were made with hand painted or decal decorations. The most familiar Warwick has a shaded brown background. The name Warwick is part of the mark and sometimes the mysterious word IOGA is also included.” An article by Vanessa Orr in the February 2003 Antique Trader throws additional light on the IOGA: “Some of the earliest pieces of Warwick China, created between 1900 and 1914, are stamped with the initials ‘IOGA’. They are highly prized among collectors.” The bottom of our plate has both the Warwick mark and the IOGA, but unlike the more familiar shaded brown background, this plate’s background is the more unusual deep green at the rim softly shading to a light beige in the center above the monk. 10-1/4" in diameter and just shy of 1" deep, with a 6-1/2" base ring underneath. Excellent condition, with no chips, nicks, or cracks, and only the slightest crazing and a couple of glaze pops. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Sunbeam Art Deco chrome & bakelite pitcher
What a gorgeous Art Deco pitcher! Its shiny chrome finished exterior is encircled by 4 inlaid bands of black bakelite and it also has a black bakelite handle and lid knob. Pitcher stands 7-1/2" tall at its graceful spout lip with diameters of 3-1/4" at its mouth and 3-3/8" at its base. It measures 6" across from its spout to its 4-3/4" long black bakelite handle that’s vertically ribbed for easy gripping and lifting – a very good idea since this heavy pitcher weighs 28-1/2 oz empty! Flip-open hinged lid is marked “Sunbeam” and the pitcher bottom says “Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, Chicago, U.S.A., Design Patent No. D-92668” with another 6 underneath. Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, founded in the early 1890s, became Sunbeam in 1946. The pitcher design was patented in 1934 by Michael W. McArdle. Perfect size for a bar pitcher, this Art Deco beauty is in great vintage condition with no dings or dents. A few little rough places on the spout and around the rim where the lid has come in constant contact with it. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Copper huaso hat
This decorative vintage copper huaso hat from Chili is 8-3/4" in diameter with a 1" tall x 3" diameter crown. And before you start sending me emails saying that this is a gaucho hat, I’ll admit you may be right, but there seems to be a dispute as to whether Chilean cowboys are actually gauchos. Argentinian cowboys are gauchos, Brazilian cowboys are often called gauchos, but a lot of people insist that Chilean cowboys are huasos. A lot of other people keep talking about Chilean gauchos. Okay, whatever. I don’t want to get into the middle of a cultural argument, so you’re welcome to call this hat by whichever name you choose! Although unmarked as to maker, it’s definitely from Chile because the emblem on its crown is the Chilean coat of arms, consisting of a condor, the strongest bird of the Chilean skies, and a huemul, the most distinctive animal of Chile, flanking a shield containing a single 5-pointed star. The naval crowns on their heads symbolize Chile’s maritime renown. A crest consisting of three feathers sits atop the shield. These feathers were historically what the Presidents of the Republic placed in their hats to distinguish themselves. The official coat of arms has a motto below: “Por la razón o por la fuerza”, Spanish for “By reason or by force.” This one simply says “Recuerdo de Chile” (“I remember Chile”). The crown is surrounded by a braided copper band. The brim features a guitar, a horse head, a lariat, a horseshoe, two stirrups, and several sheafs of wheat. On the back is a hanging loop. Excellent vintage condition with one small dent at the edge of the crown and another on the brim. Makes a striking wall hanging, not to mention a great conversation piece, especially if the conversation turns to gauchos vs. huasos! (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Louisville Stoneware ice bucket
The front of this waaay cool – no pun intended – Louisville Stoneware ice bucket features a pair of entwined upturned horseshoes handpainted in shades of mottled gray. Top and base are rimmed in gray bands and strings of embossed beads. Standing an impressive 6-3/4" tall, its interior is 6" deep, its rim is slightly over 6-1/2" in diameter and its pedestal foot flares out to the 5-3/8" diameter base. Concave bottom carries the famous Louisville Stoneware artist palette logo and is dated 2006, making it one of the last pieces to sport this distinctive logo since both the company ownership and logo changed one year later. The bottom also says this piece is oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe, so the Louisville Stoneware folks evidently envisioned it as a multi-purpose serving piece. Actually, it would make an outstanding vase, too! Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or scratches. Be sure to see our coordinating pair of Embossed Running Horse julep cups.
