This is the “Rich Man” tumbler from Gay Fad’s “Rich Man Poor Man” set of 8 frosted tumblers introduced in 1950, one caricature for each person in the nursery rhyme: Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief, doctor, lawyer, merchant, chief. Each caricature is a black line drawing with red and white accents. Glass stands 6-1/4" tall with diameters of 2-7/8" at its mouth and 2-3/8" at its base. The Gay Fad insignia is at the bottom right of the caricature. Bottom marked with Federal’s F in a shield. This is one of Gay Fad’s full-color “Square Dance” zombie glasses introduced in the 1951 Gay Fad catalog as a set of eight, each with a different character (or two) and a jingle underneath. The catalog copy says: “The ‘Caller’s’ chant and the merry action of the square dance fairly radiate from these colorful tumblers.” Here a gent and his lady with flying pigtails twirl to the music. The jingle says, “Promenade with your partner so sweet, Lift that gal right off her feet.” Frosted zombie stands 6-3/4" tall with a diameter of 2-1/2" at both the rim and the base. Bottom carries the Federal mark of an F in a shield. Perfect condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, or color loss. Requires hand washing to preserve the paint and the finish.
