Ol’ Swaphos recently got an email from our good friend Dick that included a bunch of pictures of neat old gas stations. The pictures were so great we just had to add them to our site so you, too, can take a nostalgic drive down memory lane. Dick said he remembers working at a gas station like these when he was 13 years old and had to hand pump the gas to the top glass container in order to get it into the hose to go into the car. And with a fill-up you got the gas pumped for you, your windshield cleaned, oil & fluids checked, tires checked, and a free map, if you wanted it. All that for 25 cents a gallon, 19 cents if there was a "gas war" going on!

		This kid is jumping on the bell hose. For those of you too young to remember bell hoses, each gas station had one that snaked out a door far enough so that when a car drove over it, a bell would ring inside to alert the mechanic that a customer needed attention out front. You could also hear the bell outside, and kids loved to jump on the hose just to make the bell ring. Ol’ Swaphos says to be sure and tell you that many a mechanic got a nasty bump on his head from being startled by that bell while working under a car hood. And if the alarm turned out to be a jumping kid instead of a customer, the kid was sure to get a tongue-lashing (if not a whack!) from the injured mechanic who sent him home so his parents could give him another whack! Gee, I wonder if Ol’ Swaphos speaks from experience??

	Hmmm. Gas skyrockets to 28 cents a gallon & 34 cents for “ethyl”!




		It’s a 50-star flag (Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959), but the car’s gotta be a ‘40’s model!










			This gas station is on the famous old Route 66! Okay, all together now: Well, if you ever plan to motor west, Just take my way, that's the highway that's the best. Get your kicks on Route 66. Well, it winds from Chicago to LA, More than 2000 miles all the way. Get your kicks on Route 66. Well, you go to St. Louie; Joplin, Missouri; And Oklahoma City's mighty pretty. You'll see Amarillo; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; (don't forget Winona), Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino... Won't you get hip to this timely tip And go take that California trip. Get your kicks on Route 66!
