“Sincerely, Elvis '77” music box decanter
Say the name “Elvis,” and millions of us old enough to personally remember him and his music will immediately smile and say, “Ah, yes, the King.” And King he was, from the time he burst forth in the mid-'50s, mesmerizing his ever-increasing crowds of screaming, adoring fans, until his untimely death on August 16, 1977. Thirty years later, the legend still continues and Elvis memorabilia is eagerly sought after by collectors worldwide, not only those of us who ourselves have become “oldies but goodies” -- how’d THAT happen?? -- but generations of younger fans who never had the extraordinary experience of seeing him in person and must rely on grainy black-and-white film clips to see his infamous appearance on Ed Sullivan’s TV show where the cameras weren’t allowed to film him below his waist! Parents of the time were utterly scandalized by those undulating hips! No wonder he was called “Elvis the Pelvis” as well as “the King of Rock-’n’-Roll!”
Santa Fe Trading Post is proud to offer this “Sincerely, Elvis '77” music box decanter, the first in the Elvis series produced in 1977 by McCormick Distillery. This is the “old Elvis,” wearing a '70s-style highly decorated white jumpsuit with bell-bottom pants and stand-up open collar, with a long blue scarf draped around his neck. Having had the privilege of seeing one of his never-to-be-forgotten performances at the Las Vegas Hilton in the summer of 1973, I can assure you that Elvis did indeed perform in incredible white jumpsuits like this one, and at some point late in the concert he would rip off the scarf (a red one the night I saw him), mop his brow with it, and then throw it into the audience, nearly starting a riot!
This beautiful porcelain music box decanter is 7-3/4" tall. A 6-3/8" tall Elvis, holding a microphone in his right hand and gesturing with his left, stands in front of an amplifier on a sloping 2-3/4" x 2-3/4" brown “wood-grained” base holding the music box mechanism that plays “Love Me Tender.” The wind-up key is on the bottom and the on-off lever is on the back. Base front says “Sincerely, Elvis '77” and base back carries the original gold sticker saying “McCormick Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 86 proof, Distilled and Bottled by McCormick Distilling Co., Weston, MO.” Base bottom carries a second original gold sticker saying “Container Made In Japan.”
This decanter comes in its original box with its original Styrofoam padding. While the decanter itself is in perfect condition with no nicks, chips, or cracks, and the music box plays perfectly, the storage box has several rips and scuffs and the lower back portions of both the Styrofoam padding and the box look like they’ve been eaten away by mice. (Too bad the previous owner(s) didn’t have Ol’ Swaphos’ tips for preventing this kind of damage.) Box front has a clear plastic window through which you can see the decanter. One side has a long biography of Elvis and the other lists all his gold records, gold albums, and platinum albums. Box back contains sketches of the second and third decanters in the Elvis series. Lid says “McCormick brings you A Portrait of Elvis,” above which is an eagle and banner saying “Americana Porcelain by McCormick.”
This is a full decanter, the tax seal never having been broken, but the container has a collector value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of the alcohol inside, and any incidental contents are not intended for consumption. Nevertheless, you must be 21 years of age or older to purchase this beautiful decanter. Can’t you just picture it filled with perfume and displayed on milady’s dresser? The ultimate gift for the ultimate Elvis fan! (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
