Glo-Hill chrome tray with golden browm bakelite handles

Here is a truly lovely Art Deco chrome tray with two-tone brown bakelite feet and handles. The shiny mirror-finish tray measures 10-1/4" x 5-5/8" and features a large shallow center well, but it’s the gorgeous bakelite end pieces that make this tray a work of art. No way can photos do justice to the deep golden brown color. Two joined geometric carvings on each handle reveal the lighter mottled golden hue of the bakelite’s interior. Original paper sticker on the tray’s bottom says this beauty is one of the Gourmates line styled by Glo-Hill of Canada. In 1946, Sol, Paul, and Leo Globus, together with their brother in-law Harry Hill, created the Glo-Hill Corporation in Montreal. The business originally manufactured beautiful carving sets and cutlery, but as it grew, Glo-Hill began diversifying their product line and offering chrome hollowware pieces used in home entertaining. They imported materials from factories located along the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S., such as bakelite and many glass components that were being manufactured by expert glass manufactures like McKee, Glasbake and Jeannette Glass. Paul Globus was considered the stylist for Glo-Hill and it was his ideas that became the exquisite designs and Art Deco styling for which Glo-Hill became famous. Their products were sold throughout Canada in high-end department stores. The company ceased doing business in the 1970s, and their pieces are eagerly sought after by collectors today. Our tray stands 1-3/4" tall with an overall length of 11". Original sticker on the underside that says “Gourmates styled by Glo-Hill Canada.” Excellent vintage condition, with no dings or dents to the chrome and only very light usage scratching. The bakelite is pristine. See our coordinating bread tray listed immediately below. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Shiny mirror-finish tray measures 11-1/2" x 6-1/4" and features a deep center well. Each of the two-tone brown bakelite end pieces is decorated on top by two joined geometric carvings that reveal the lighter mottled golden hue of the bakelite’s interior. Tray stands 1-3/4" tall with an overall length of 12-1/2". Original sticker on the underside says “Gourmates styled by Glo-Hill Canada.” Excellent vintage condition. The bakelite is pristine. West Bend Penguin hot/cold server

This West Bend “Penguin” hot/cold server makes the perfect ice bucket, but could just as easily be used as a bun warmer or for any number of other purposes. It has a distinctly Art Deco look with its round shape, large brown bakelite lid knob, and curved brown bakelite handles. Made of chrome plated aluminum, the 5-1/2" tall bucket’s mirror finish exterior features a row of four raised penguins marching around each side, identifying it as one of West Bend’s Penguin line of products first introduced in 1941. Bucket is 4-1/2" deep with diameters of 7" at its mouth and 5" at its base that has three little knob feet. Interior is brushed aluminum. Bottom is marked with the West Bend Penguin logo and also shows the patent number. 2-piece unit measures 9-3/4" across from handle to handle and stands just shy of 9" tall when lidded. The West Bend Aluminum Co. was incorporated in 1911 by five West Bend, WI businessmen led by Bernhardt C. Ziegler and two skilled tool-and-die makers. Each of the 7 men put up $1,000 to start the company. Within weeks they had rented an old button factory on the banks of the Milwaukee River for $8.50 a month and had acquired a lathe, shaper, and drill press, quickly followed by a draw press able to turn out 15 kinds of utensils. After ordering 3,000 pounds of aluminum from Pennsylvania, they hired several employees and went into business, first exhibiting West Bend products at a 1913 hardware association meeting in Milwaukee. Their first big customer was Sears, Roebuck and Co. which purchased 40-50% of West Bend’s products up through 1919. A privately held company until 1968, West Bend is still in business today in West Bend, WI as a wholly owned subsidiary of Premark International, Inc. Our vintage Penguin server is in outstanding condition with no dings, dents, or interior discoloration, and looks virtually unused. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Sunbeam Art Deco chrome & bakelite pitcher

What a gorgeous Art Deco pitcher! Its shiny chrome finished exterior is encircled by 4 inlaid bands of black bakelite and it also has a black bakelite handle and lid knob. Pitcher stands 7-1/2" tall at its graceful spout lip with diameters of 3-1/4" at its mouth and 3-3/8" at its base. It measures 6" across from its spout to its 4-3/4" long black bakelite handle that’s vertically ribbed for easy gripping and lifting – a very good idea since this heavy pitcher weighs 28-1/2 oz empty! Flip-open hinged lid is marked “Sunbeam” and the pitcher bottom says “Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, Chicago, U.S.A., Design Patent No. D-92668” with another 6 underneath. Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, founded in the early 1890s, became Sunbeam in 1946. The pitcher design was patented in 1934 by Michael W. McArdle. Perfect size for a bar pitcher, this Art Deco beauty is in great vintage condition with no dings or dents. A few little rough places on the spout and around the rim where the lid has come in constant contact with it. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Glo-Hill 3-compartment chrome tray with cherry bakelite handle

This is a very attractive Glo-Hill triangular chrome tray with deep cherry 2-toned bakelite handle. 8-3/4" x 8-3/4" x 8-3/4" mirror-finish tray has three oval wells, each with a removable 4-5/8" x 3" x 3/4" deep pressed glass dish featuring vertically ribbed sides and a flower petal design on the bottom. Since the Glo-Hill company imported glass components from such expert glass manufactures as McKee, Glasbake and Jeannette Glass, it’s likely that one of those well-known companies produced these glass pieces. Tapered bakelite center post with chrome accent flares out at the top to become a 1-1/2" diameter carrying knob with vertically ribbed sides. Bakelite is the most beautiful deep cherry red color interspersed with lighter red that just glows. Tray bottom carries its original sticker that says “Gourmates styled by Glo-Hill Canada.” Excellent vintage condition and looks like it’s never been used. Both the chrome and the bakelite are pristine, and there are no nicks, chips, or cracks to any of the three glass pieces. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

German shot glass travel set

Here’s a unique vintage shot glass travel set dating to ca WWII. Set consists of 4 metal shot glasses with chrome finished exteriors and gold washed interiors. They are slightly graduated in size allowing them to fit one inside the other, with all 4 together fitting inside a leather travel case with snap closure. Largest glass stands 2-1/8" tall with diameters of 2" at the mouth and 1-3/8" at the bottom. When inside the leather case, the set measures 2-3/8" tall with diameters of 2-1/4" at the top and 1-1/2" at the bottom. Case top has gold initials of MJE. Some of the stitching around the top has come loose and there are some scuffs on the sides and a small tear in the leather above the snap from being opened and closed so many times, but the case is still fully functional and the snap closes securely. The shot glass interiors and exteriors show very slight scratching that we have made no attempt to buff out. Bottoms of all 4 shot glasses are marked “Made in Germany,” indicating they were made prior to the post-WWII division of Germany into East (German Democratic Republic) and West (Federal Republic of Germany) in 1949. Quite an amazing relic of times long gone by. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Glo-Hill square etched chrome tray with butterscotch bakelite handles

This 7-1/8" square Glo-Hill chrome tray has a very attractive etched finish rather than a mirror finish. Its two bakelite handles are butterscotch marbled with black. It also has a removable 5-1/2" diameter glass dish that fits into its center well. Dish has a scalloped edge and a starburst design on the bottom. Since the Glo-Hill company imported glass components from such expert glass manufactures as McKee, Glasbake and Jeannette Glass, it’s likely that one of those well-known companies produced this glass piece. Tray stands a scant 1" tall and rests on three little circular green pads, one of which is missing. Excellent vintage condition, with no dings, dents, or scratching to the chrome. One tiny nick to the bottom edge of one of the bakelite handles. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Glo-Hill etched chrome leaf tray with butterscotch bakelite handle

This whimsical Glo-Hill etched chrome tray is shaped like a leaf, complete with realistic veining. Tray is a scant 1/2" high x 4-3/4" wide x not quite 10" long and measures 13-7/8" to the tip of its beautiful marbled butterscotch bakelite handle that shows Glo-Hill’s attention to superior design detail. Instead of being straight, the handle is ever so slightly curved like a real leaf stem, which also makes it fit more easily in your hand. Superb vintage condition with no dings, dents, or even scratching! Looks like it’s never been used. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
