Throughout National Geographic’s long history, their Maps and Supplements have been the gold standard for cartographic excellence. The magnificent map detail, plus superb historical and descriptive information of the area(s) mapped, provides an excellent and fascinating reference source for students, history buffs, geography buffs, armchair world travelers, and all lovers of maps. These are highly collectible items that we are proud to present. Some people hesitate to buy National Geographic maps because they’d like to frame them, but are afraid of the fold lines. However, any good frame shop should be able to mount and frame these maps and eliminate the fold lines in the finished product.

Colonization and Trade in the New World

This is a 30" x 22-1/2" map of North America, Mexico and Central America (New Spain), and the northern tip of South America (Terra Firma) that was an insert in the December 1977 issue of National Geographic. Under the heading of “Battle Royal for Spain’s American Empire,” it says “This map is a composite based on charts designed about 1720 by cartographer Herman Moll, a Dutchman who lived in London. Spellings and typefaces are contemporary with that period. Map colors reflect the claims of rival nations: France - green, Spain - orange, Britain - yellow.” Many interesting vignettes such as “Caribbean Claim Jumpers,” “Manilla Galleons,” “The Aztec Ruin,” “Where is the ‘Santa Maria’?”, etc. The back, entitled “History Salvaged From the Sea,” features a large cut-away drawing of a sailing ship and drawings of many artifacts salvaged from shipwrecks under the headings of “Cannons and cutlasses,” “Echos of shipboard life,” “Cargo bound for Europe,” and “Cargo bound for the Americas.” A final section entitled “The challengers who cracked Spain’s monopoly” profiles the “bold pack of sea wolves” who “sallied to the gates of Spain’s American empire nearly as soon as she took it over.” Excellent condition with slight discoloration at some of the folds. P.S. I would suspect that since Ol’ Swaphos is getting soft in his old age, if you purchase five of these wonderful maps and send him a sweet email telling him which other map you like very much, it, too, will show up in your map package!

This was the “first color photomosaic of the 48 contiguous United States” using “the LANDSAT imagery of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration” that “captures not only visible light, but infrared, providing more detail than would appear to the naked eye. This mosaic of our 48 contiguous states embodies 569 separate and virtually cloudless views, and renders our land in approximately natural colors.” The back contains a large atlas-type map of the U.S. showing state boundaries, Interstates and highways, cities, rivers, mountains, etc., with inserts for Alaska and Hawaii. Very good condition with one tiny tear at one of the fold intersections. Tell a friend.
