Lovers’ Luncheonette basket
This vintage picnic basket is just too cool for words and Ol’ Swaphos immediately dubbed it the “Lovers’ Luncheonette” when he spied it at a recent estate sale. Not only is the 10" x 5-1/2" x 9" tall lidded basket the perfect size to hold an outrageously romantic picnic for two, but you can even take along two bottles of wine in the two 9" x 4-1/2" diameter wine carriers on the back! The basket’s flip-open lid latches securely via an ingenious locking system composed of two dangling loops on the front of the lid that fit over two stationary loops on the basket front and lock in place with a sliding split dowel. Tightly woven and very sturdily constructed with a bent wood frame that wraps vertically around the basket portion and rises an additional 5-1/2" to become a large wrapped handle. The wine carriers are lashed together and to the basket back with top and bottom loops and held securely in place with diagonal braces descending from the handle to the side of each carrier. Additional diagonal braces attach to the side of the basket. Two woven button feet at the front of the basket bottom and one at the bottom back of each of the wine carriers allow the basket to sit basically flat on a table or the ground. Total height of 15-1/4". Outstanding vintage condition with no breaks to the weaving or lashings. Slight peeling at a couple of places on the frame bottom. Make your next picnic with your sweetheart an event to remember – peanut butter sandwiches definitely not recommended! (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Parasol basket
Mary Poppins would have loved this vintage parasol basket that measures 24" tall from the tip of its metal cap to the end of its curved wooden handle. Conical basket is 8" deep and 11-1/2" in diameter at its opening where two cross pieces brace the handle. One of them has bowed and split over the years, but is not broken through. Other than that, this seemingly fragile basket has withstood the ravages of time remarkably well. All weaving on the body is still tight and undamaged, but there are a few barely noticeable small gaps at the bottom of the wavy trim piece. Still strong and fully functional as a unique display piece for silk flower arrangements or other non-heavy items. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Buttocks basket
This old buttocks basket measures 9-1/2" x 11-1/4" at its oval opening and 12" x 14-1/2" at its widest point. It is 4-1/2" deep x 10-1/2" tall at the wrapped handle that attaches to the basket with “eye of God” lashing. As with all of these vintage hand-crafted baskets, this one is not perfectly symmetrical. One side curves outward somewhat more than the other. That side has several breaks in its vertical weaving that can’t be seen from the front or back and in no way affect this basket’s functionality, but is reflected in our price. “Perfect” buttocks baskets sell for over $150! Gathering basket
This tightly woven gathering basket is 13" x 13-1/2" at its top, 11" in diameter at its bottom, and 6-1/2" deep. It stands 10-3/4" tall at its wide wrapped handle. In days gone by it may have served as a market basket, an egg basket, or even a child’s Easter basket. Yes, Easter baskets were actual baskets back in the ’50’s before plastic overtook the world! This one is very well constructed and has survived in virtually pristine condition. The wide vertical staves overlap on the bottom, making for a slightly roly poly sitting position that’s absolutely authentic to these vintage baskets and downright nostalgic for anyone over the age of 50! Huge Mexican basket
This enormous basket stands 15-1/2" tall (18" at the substantial handles) with diameters of 19-1/4" at the top and 11" at the bottom. Loose weaving allows air circulation should you wish to use it as a laundry basket or clothes hamper, but I’m wondering if its originally intended purpose wasn’t as a fruit or vegetable basket for open-air market sales. Interior bottom is stamped “Mexico,” with two words underneath that I can’t make out. Excellent vintage condition with a few minor splits but no real damage. Quite a statement piece whatever you use it for! (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Shabby chic flower basket
If you love the shabby chic look, this huge vintage flower basket is right up your alley. It measures a whopping 20" across at its flat ends, 14-1/2" across at its flared sides, and stands 13-1/2" tall! The original white paint is chipping in several places, particularly on the handle, but other than one split to the coiled wrapping, there’s no damage and all weaving is intact. Marvelous display piece or big enough to carry all your long-stemmed cut flowers from the garden into the house for arranging. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Oval gallery tray basket
This lovely 10-1/2" x 16-3/4" oval gallery tray basket stands 2-3/4" high. Its woven trim piece overhangs the basket rim allowing for easy carrying and producing a top measurement of 13-1/4" x 18-3/4". Many practical uses, such as for silverware, napkins, etc. on a buffet table, but I’ve also seen these hung on a wall as a frame for artwork or a photograph. Makes a very unique presentation. Superb vintage condition with no damage other than a break to one of the bottom lashings. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.

Pyrex basket caddy
This basket caddy was made to hold a rectangular 4-qt. Pyrex baking dish. Two large leather handles make carrying a breeze and the 9-3/8" x 14-3/8" particle board base acts as a heat shield to protect your table from the hot dish. Bottom is marked “Made for Pyrex Brand 233, Corning N.Y. U.S.A.” Two of the four little button feet are missing, but the basket sits flat and doesn’t wobble. Very practical and quite attractive! Unusual vase basket
This unusually shaped basket is very light weight and has a large loop on the back so it can be hung on a wall, but with its 2" x 5-1/2" ovular base, it can just as easily sit on a shelf or table. Presumably it was intended as a “vase” for a silk flower arrangement, but you can undoubtedly think of several additional uses, too. It stands 10" tall at the center, rising to 12-1/4" at its upwardly flared “ears.” I’ve probably lived at the Trading Post too long, but the overall shape reminds me of a steer’s head! Excellent vintage condition, with only a couple of splits to the lashings that in no way affect its attractiveness or functionality. (Click on picture for more images.) Tell a friend.
